Paks Nuclear Power Plant Posts Record Revenue in 2023

Hungarian Power Plants Achieve Record Sales Revenues in 2023
The Hungarian power plants have shown exceptional performance in 2023, with the Paks nuclear power plant in central Hungary leading the way. According to the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Office (MEKH), the Paks nuclear power plant achieved sales revenues of over HUF 210 billion (EUR 531 million) last year, marking the highest revenue in the past decade.
The impressive performance of the Paks nuclear power plant was complemented by the success of renewable energy producers in the country. The Mátra Power Plant in northern Hungary, the second-largest power plant in Hungary, covered around 6.2% of the gross domestic electricity demand with its production. Despite facing challenges, such as a decrease in profit after tax, the plant saw an increase in sales revenue from the previous year.
In contrast, the Dunamenti Power Plant in central Hungary, the largest operating domestic natural gas-fired power plant, saw a decrease in revenue in 2023 due to market effects and a slight decrease in electricity production. Despite these challenges, the Budapest Power Plant, the largest domestic district heating producer, reported an increase in turnover and profit after tax.
In the realm of renewable energy, solar power plants covered 10% of Hungary’s gross electricity consumption in 2023, showcasing the growing importance of sustainable energy sources in the country. Wind power plants, though covering a smaller percentage of electricity demand, also played a significant role in the energy system. Biomass and biogas power plants together accounted for 4.7% of gross domestic electricity demand, highlighting the diverse energy mix in Hungary.
Furthermore, the Budapest Waste-to-Energy Plant, the only major municipal solid waste-to-energy plant in Hungary, reported an increase in revenue and profit after tax in 2023. This development underscores the importance of waste-to-energy solutions in the country’s energy sector.
Overall, the performance of Hungarian power plants in 2023 reflects a dynamic energy landscape with a mix of traditional and renewable energy sources contributing to the country’s energy needs. As Hungary continues to prioritize sustainability and innovation in its energy sector, the future looks promising for the growth and development of the nation’s power infrastructure.
