President Ilham Aliyev: Azerbaijan’s Electric Capacity Set to Double in 5 Years

Azerbaijan’s Renewable Energy Ambitions: A Path to 6,500 Megawatts by 2030
In a recent interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) in Beijing, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan announced bold plans for the country’s renewable energy sector. He revealed that contracts recently signed and currently being executed will lead to the generation of 6,500 megawatts of renewable energy by the year 2030.
President Aliyev emphasized the significance of these developments, stating, "So far, the contracts we have signed, which are now in the phase of implementation, will give us 6,500 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030." This ambitious target is noteworthy as the total installed capacity of Azerbaijan currently stands at 8,000 megawatts. The upcoming surge in renewable energy capacity could nearly double the country’s current electric power capabilities.
Of the projected 6,500 megawatts, 6,000 megawatts will be generated from solar and wind sources, while 500 megawatts will come from hydroelectric power. The transition to renewable energy is expected to significantly reduce the reliance on natural gas for electricity production, allowing Azerbaijan to export its natural gas to international markets, thereby generating substantial profits. This shift will also ensure that energy needs for the domestic market are adequately met.
In addition to green energy initiatives, Azerbaijan is making strides in sustainable transportation. The country has already introduced 160 electric buses that are currently in operation, with an order for an additional 200 buses. In a landmark move, Azerbaijan plans to start joint manufacturing of BYD electric buses, with an annual production capacity of 500 units. The aim is to fully transition the public transportation system in Baku to green energy, with future plans to extend this transformation to other cities across the nation.
President Aliyev concluded by highlighting the unique opportunity for Azerbaijan to engage in bilateral cooperation in renewable energy, stating that these efforts align perfectly with the nation’s strategic goals.
As Azerbaijan looks towards a greener future, its commitment to expanding renewable energy infrastructure could firmly position the country as a regional leader in sustainable practices.
