President Legalizes Cars with Foreign Number Plates

Bishkek, January 10, 2025 – The President of Kyrgyzstan has signed a decree on the legalization of cars with foreign number plates, as reported by the Erkin-Too newspaper. This decision comes after the mass impounding of cars with Armenian and Abkhaz number plates in recent months.

The Cabinet of Ministers has been tasked with developing a registration procedure for cars with foreign number plates within two months, as well as determining the process for legalizing such vehicles within six months. The decree outlines a three-stage process for this legalization effort.

The first stage will focus on legalizing cars that have all the necessary documents, followed by the registration of cars without documents but meeting technical requirements in the second stage. The third stage will allow owners of cars without documents to either export them outside the country or dismantle them for spare parts.

Residents from Issyk-Kul and Osh regions have expressed concerns over the impounding of cars with foreign number plates and have called on the government to address the issue. With this new decree, it is hoped that a solution will be provided for owners of such vehicles in Kyrgyzstan.
