Rights Protection Initiative Protests Injustice at Metehan Border Gate
A recent protest led by the Rights Protection Initiative took place at the Metehan Border Gate, drawing attention to real estate problems and injustices in Northern Cyprus. The demonstration began in Ortaköy, Nicosia, with activists marching to the border gate carrying banners.
The President of the Turkish Cypriot Bar Associations, Hasan Esendağlı, delivered a press release during the protest, highlighting the international significance of the real estate issues in Northern Cyprus. He stressed that the Greek side’s refusal to compromise is a major obstacle to resolving these disputes.
Esendağlı expressed concerns over legal actions taken by the Greek Cypriot leadership against business people operating in Northern Cyprus, accusing them of using the law for political gain. He emphasized the importance of the Immovable Property Commission as a mechanism endorsed by the European Court of Human Rights for resolving property disputes.
The protest received support from various organizations, including the Turkish Cypriot Building Contractors Association, the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry, and the Turkish Cypriot Hoteliers Association. Esendağlı reiterated the group’s commitment to upholding international law in addressing these issues.
The Rights Protection Initiative continues to advocate for justice and reconciliation in Cyprus, calling for comprehensive negotiations to address property problems and move towards a peaceful resolution.
