Ready to Reform: BRTK’s Commitment to Public Sector Change
Bar Council President Calls for Merit-Based Public Administration Reform
Bar Council President Hasan Esendağlı recently delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the 2024-2025 Judicial Year, where he highlighted the need for a standard and fair application of merit in public administration in order to address the country’s longstanding problems.
Esendağlı emphasized that while some issues have been resolved over the years, many have become chronic due to the lack of merit-based practices in public service. He stated that it is crucial for qualified individuals to be appointed to roles in public services in order to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Calling for public reform with merit as its main focus, Esendağlı expressed the Bar Association’s readiness to work towards this goal. He also referenced a High Court decision in South Nicosia regarding property rights, stressing that it is unjust to target Turkish Cypriots and business owners on the island without a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
Esendağlı urged the TRNC state and its institutions to take action to inform the international community about these injustices and support affected citizens in their quest for justice. He also highlighted the Bar Association’s involvement in various social justice issues, including child rights, environmental protection, and animal welfare.
In conclusion, Esendağlı emphasized the importance of upholding merit-based principles in public administration to address ongoing challenges and ensure fair treatment for all individuals.
