"Strong Media, Conscious Society Summit: Addressing Media’s Impact on Social Transformation"
The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) recently hosted the "Strong Media, Conscious Society Summit," an event dedicated to exploring the media’s influence on societal structures, with a particular focus on digital media.
This initiative aimed to foster a comprehensive dialogue on the effects of media content. Key discussions revolved around the proliferation of harmful materials, particularly those aimed at younger audiences, and strategies to bolster audience awareness regarding these issues.
RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin emphasized the significance of engaging content through street interviews, stating, "Random street interviews about major news have started to be conducted." This approach aims to capture authentic public opinions and perceptions regarding the media landscape.
Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş reinforced the importance of media representation by highlighting ongoing efforts to combat harmful content and promote positive examples. She noted the essential role of media in shaping societal values.
In agreement, National Education Minister Yusuf Tekin expressed concern about the prevalence of toxic content that affects children, saying, "The media often brings to light negative aspects, creating an environment that produces harmful material for young audiences." This acknowledgment underscores the need for collective responsibility in media consumption and production.
The summit concluded with several recommendations aimed at enhancing societal engagement with media. A notable suggestion was to replace the term "social media" with "virtual media" to better illustrate the distinction between media portrayals and reality. This change aims to increase public awareness and foster critical media literacy.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like the "Strong Media, Conscious Society Summit" are crucial for promoting a more informed and conscious society in the face of pervasive media influences.
