SCO Energy Ministers Set Joint Goals for 2030
ASTANA – The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Energy Ministers have approved a draft strategy for energy cooperation until 2030, proposed by Kazakhstan, during a meeting in the Kazakh capital on June 20-21.
The Kazakh Energy Ministry stated that the document outlines key areas of collaboration among SCO member states in the energy sector. This includes enhancing the transit potential of energy resources, diversifying export routes, creating a balanced energy system, modernizing traditional energy sources, improving industry practices, developing innovative technologies for renewable energy sources, promoting hydrogen energy, and exploring energy-saving solutions.
“We have reached a consensus on the need for a balanced approach, developing both traditional and renewable energy in line with each SCO country’s national conditions,” highlighted Kazakh Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev.
During the meeting, participants also discussed strategic approaches to further energy cooperation, emphasizing the importance of new approaches and concrete solutions to ensure the sustainability and growth of the energy sector in SCO member states, observer states, and dialogue partner countries.
Additionally, ministers exchanged views on the current state and future prospects of the global and regional energy agenda. They deliberated on energy industry development, including opportunities for attracting investments and financing for various projects and programs in this field.
With the SCO representing approximately one-third of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP), covering 60% of Eurasia’s territory, and accounting for 42% of the global population, it brings together major energy producers, transit countries, and consumers of energy resources.
The approved draft strategy aims to strengthen energy cooperation within the SCO over the next decade, paving the way for enhanced collaboration in the region’s energy sector.
