Stoltenberg: Sweden Meets Responsibility – World News Update
NATO Secretary General Talks Turkey-Sweden Relations
In a recent meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg discussed the relationship between Turkey and Sweden. Stoltenberg acknowledged Turkey’s legitimate concerns while noting that Sweden has fulfilled its responsibilities and taken concrete steps to address these issues.
However, the Secretary General also noted that the organizers of recent demonstrations in Sweden are attempting to prevent the country from joining NATO and weaken the alliance as a result. He stressed the need for increased cooperation between Turkey and Sweden, stating that membership in NATO would make both countries stronger.
Stoltenberg went on to express his appreciation for Turkey’s recent actions in sending reinforcements to Kosovo during a recent conflict. The two sides plan to meet again on June 12 to continue discussing these issues under the permanent joint mechanism established in the Madrid Agreement.
