Tajani Calls for Creation of EU Army
Antonio Tajani, leader of the Forza Italia party, has emphasized the need for stronger cooperation in defense among European countries. In an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa, Tajani argued that the European Union should prioritize the establishment of a common army in order to play a more effective role in preventing conflicts.
Tajani pointed out that in a world where crises are experienced from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific and with powerful players such as the USA, China, India, and Russia, it is essential for the EU to have its own army. He stated, “If we want to be a European power, we need a European army, and this is a fundamental condition for having an effective European foreign policy.”
Highlighting the importance of a European army for the security of European citizens, Tajani stressed that the EU citizens can only be protected by the existence of a unified force, such as the EU army.
Additionally, Tajani proposed a change in the leadership system of the EU, advocating for a single presidency instead of the current system with the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission.
Tajani, who became the leader of the Forza Italia party after the death of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi last year, continues to advocate for stronger European cooperation in defense and foreign policy.
