The Thrilling Baige Horse Racing at World Nomad Games
The Fifth World Nomad Games (WNG) are fast approaching, with less than 50 days remaining until the grand start in Astana from Sept. 8-13. One of the highlights of the event is the traditional horse racing sport known as Baige, which holds significant cultural importance in the Turkic world.
Baige has its origins in the nomadic lifestyle of the Turkic peoples, where horse racing was a common activity to mark special occasions such as weddings and celebrations. Today, Baige is a sport that requires exceptional tactical skills from the rider and showcases the endurance and strength of horses.
At the WNG, several types of horse races will be featured, including Kunan Baige, Alaman Baige, Top Baige, Flat Racing, and Zhorga Zharys. Each type of race has specific rules and caters to different age groups and horse breeds.
Kunan Baige is a race for horses over two years old and serves as a preparation for the more demanding Alaman Baige, which is a cross-country race over long distances for adult horses over three years old. Top Baige is a group race that spans between 10 to 15 kilometers and includes both children and adult riders.
Flat Racing is an elite sport where outstanding horses and experienced jockeys compete on a smooth track without obstacles. It requires tactics, strategies, and exceptional speed and endurance from the participants. Zhorga Zharys is a challenging competition involving large horses and unique riding techniques.
The WNG will provide a platform for athletes from different countries to showcase their skills and compete in these traditional horse racing sports. It promises to be a thrilling and culturally enriching experience for both participants and spectators.
