Tragic Deaths in Chilean Forest Fires
Fires Break Out in Coastal Cities of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar in Chile
According to Chilean authorities, multiple fires have erupted in various parts of the coastal cities of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar. As a result of the fires spreading to residential areas, 10 people have tragically lost their lives.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric took to his social media account to announce the declaration of a state of emergency (OHAL) in response to the fires. He stated, “We directed all our teams to the central and southern parts of the country to intervene in the fires.”
Reports indicate that the fires are rapidly advancing towards the cities of Concon, Quintero, and Maitencillo. Additionally, a fire broke out in Penuelas Lake Natural Park, located approximately 20 kilometers from the city of Valparaiso.
The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) released a statement announcing that the fire has rapidly spread due to strong winds, prompting evacuation procedures in some towns.
This is not the first time Chile has witnessed the devastating impact of forest fires. In February 2023, 13 people lost their lives as a result of similar incidents.
The situation in Chile is dire as authorities work tirelessly to combat the fires and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas. Our thoughts are with the people of Chile during this difficult time.
