TRNC’s Corruption Perception Index Drops to 26, According to BRTK

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation, a global German research organization, recently released the Northern Cyprus Corruption Perception Report for the 8th time. The report was shared with the public in a transparent manner during a meeting at Rüstem Bookstore.

During the meeting, Hubert Faustman, the Director of the Cyprus Office of the Foundation, emphasized the importance of addressing the perception of corruption. Prof. Dr. Sertaç Sonan, who has been working on this issue since 2017, highlighted the aim of identifying and addressing corruption through policy proposals.

Prof. Dr. Ömer Gökçekuş expressed concerns about the prevalence of corruption in Northern Cyprus, noting that one in every three business people admitted to giving bribes. The results of surveys conducted with business people in 2024 were also shared at the meeting.

The report revealed that 75% of business people believe that bribery and corruption are widespread in Northern Cyprus, with 75% viewing corruption as a serious problem. Only 4% of respondents believed that corruption had decreased in 2024. The overall perception of corruption in Northern Cyprus decreased by 1 point compared to the previous year.

The findings of the Northern Cyprus Corruption Perception Report shed light on the ongoing challenges and concerns related to corruption in the region. It is crucial for policymakers and stakeholders to address these issues and work towards creating a more transparent and accountable society.
