Turkey’s Embassy in Damascus Reopens Today
In a live broadcast, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan announced that Turkey’s Embassy in Damascus will be reopening. Burhan Köroğlu, Turkey’s Ambassador to Mauritania, has been appointed as the Temporary Chargé d’Affaires of the embassy. Fidan mentioned that Köroğlu and his team have already arrived in Damascus to make the embassy operational once again.
The Turkish Embassy in Damascus ceased its daily operations in March 2012, amidst the violent crackdown by the Syrian regime on peaceful demonstrators. Embassy employees and their families returned to Turkey following this decision, while the Consulate General of Syria in Istanbul continued its activities.
Recent developments in Syria have seen a shift in power, with anti-regime armed groups gaining dominance in key provinces and ultimately leading to the collapse of the Assad regime. The 61-year rule of the Baath Party has come to an end, with Assad fleeing the capital as the regime lost control in Damascus and other regions.
Furthermore, the Syrian National Army has been successful in liberating areas from terrorist organizations such as PKK/YPG. Operations like Dawn of Freedom have led to the clearing of terrorist nests in regions like Manbij, marking significant progress in the fight against extremism.
As Turkey’s Embassy in Damascus reopens its doors, it signifies a new chapter in diplomatic relations between the two countries. This move could pave the way for increased cooperation and dialogue in the region.
