Turkey Moves Forward with Purchase of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon Warplanes
After facing obstacles for a long time, Turkey has finally reached a critical threshold in the purchase of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes for the Turkish Air Force. Germany, which has been blocking the sale, has now approved the start of technical negotiations, paving the way for the acquisition to proceed.
A technical delegation from the Eurofighter consortium, consisting of experts from England, Italy, Spain, and Germany, has arrived in Turkey to begin negotiations. These talks, expected to last approximately 3 weeks, cover various technical details related to the procurement process, personnel training, and maintenance programs.
The initial phase of the purchase will involve Turkey acquiring 24 Eurofighter fighter jets, with the possibility of increasing the number to 40 in later stages. This acquisition will mark the introduction of aircraft with AESA radar into the Turkish Air Force inventory for the first time.
Experts highlight that the Eurofighter will serve as a suitable solution until Turkey’s national warplane KAAN and F-16 Block 70 aircraft join the inventory.
In a recent statement, Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler confirmed Turkey’s ongoing efforts to secure the purchase of 40 Eurofighters. Meetings with England and Spain are underway, with efforts to convince Germany to finalize the sale.
Recent developments suggest a positive shift in Germany’s stance, as news emerged that Germany has authorized the sale of an arms package to Turkey, valued at approximately 336 million euros. This indication of cooperation signals progress in the negotiations and could lead to the successful acquisition of the Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes by Turkey.
