Turkmenistan and Germany pledge to enhance bilateral cooperation
President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, embarked on a working visit to Astana, the Republic of Kazakhstan, on 17 September 2024, to take part in the second high-level meeting in the “Central Asia-Germany” format. During his visit, President Berdimuhamedov held a bilateral meeting with Federal Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz.
Both parties expressed their satisfaction at the opportunity to discuss key issues of constructive interstate cooperation in person, based on mutual respect and trust. President Berdimuhamedov conveyed greetings from the National Leader of Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who played a pivotal role in fostering cooperation between Turkmenistan and Germany.
The meeting marked the first bilateral encounter between President Berdimuhamedov and Federal Chancellor Scholz under the “Central Asia-Germany” dialogue, aiming to further strengthen Turkmen-German relations. Chancellor Scholz extended greetings and emphasized Germany’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Turkmenistan, recognizing the country’s positive contributions to global peace, security, and sustainable development.
President Berdimuhamedov highlighted the systematic and long-term nature of Turkmen-German relations, with a strong legal framework encompassing 90 different treaties and agreements. The President also acknowledged the significant role played by the Joint Turkmen-German Working Group and the Eastern Committee of the German Economy in advancing interstate cooperation through various economic initiatives.
Furthermore, President Berdimuhamedov engaged with representatives of German business circles, where State Secretary Michael Kellner expressed German businesses’ keen interest in expanding cooperation with Turkmenistan across diverse sectors. The meeting underscored the positive experience and favorable conditions in Turkmenistan that have attracted German businesses to explore partnership opportunities.
Priority areas for future collaboration included renewable energy, transport and communications, chemical and textile industries, agriculture, transitioning to a “green economy,” and leveraging innovations and technologies for mutual benefit.
The bilateral discussions and meetings between Turkmenistan and Germany underscored a shared commitment to further enhancing cooperation and fostering enduring partnerships for the betterment of both nations.
