Turkmenistan’s Main Drama Theatre presents “Great Repertoire” on May 13-14

The Main Academic Drama Theatre of Turkmenistan, located in the capital city of Ashgabat, is a symbol of the country’s cultural legacy. Built in 1927, the theatre has played a key role in promoting Turkmenistan’s theatrical traditions and showcasing the nation’s talent on the world stage.
Over the years, the theatre has staged numerous plays, spanning a wide range of genres and themes. From Shakespearean classics to contemporary dramas, the theatre has consistently delivered high-quality performances that have captivated audiences both at home and abroad.
One of the most notable productions staged by the theatre was its adaptation of the famous Turkmen folk tale, “Gorogly”. This play, which was first staged in the 1970s and subsequently restaged multiple times, tells the story of a young hero who battles against an oppressive ruler to win the love of his soulmate. The play has become a beloved classic in Turkmenistan and has helped to popularize the folklore of the region.
In recent years, the theatre has sought to modernize its offerings, with productions featuring contemporary themes and innovative staging techniques. In 2019, the theatre staged a production of “Anna Karenina”, based on the classic novel by Leo Tolstoy, which was met with critical acclaim.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Main Academic Drama Theatre of Turkmenistan has continued to stay active, offering online productions and live performances with limited capacity. With a rich history and a commitment to innovation, the theatre remains a vital part of Turkmenistan’s cultural landscape.
