Turkmenistan’s Quest for UNESCO Geopark Orient: A New Exploration

Turkmenistan Takes Steps Towards Creating UNESCO Geopark

The Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan recently hosted the first meeting of the Working Group on the Study and Creation of a UNESCO Geopark. Chaired by the Minister, the group consisted of representatives from relevant ministries, scientific institutions, the business community, and the media. Discussions during the meeting focused on the prospects of establishing a geopark in Turkmenistan that could potentially be included in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Chynar Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO, provided valuable information to the participants regarding the process of setting up geoparks, international practices, and UNESCO’s requirements. Geoparks are recognized as unique areas with significant natural, geological, and cultural assets of global importance. With 213 geoparks established in 48 countries worldwide, the creation of such a site in Turkmenistan would not only aid in preserving the country’s natural heritage but also bolster ecotourism development.

Members of the Working Group acknowledged the presence of distinctive geological features in Turkmenistan that could serve as a foundation for a geopark. It was decided at the initial stage to identify the most suitable location and compile a scientific and legal rationale for its establishment. The development of geoparks is not only crucial for safeguarding natural resources but also plays a vital role in supporting the local economy, generating employment opportunities, promoting ecotourism, and enhancing public awareness about the geological heritage of the region.

As Turkmenistan progresses towards the creation of a UNESCO Geopark, it is evident that this initiative will contribute significantly to the country’s sustainable development and environmental conservation efforts.
