U.S. Offers $1,000 to Migrants Who Choose Voluntary Self-Deportation

U.S. Launches Self-Deportation Program for Undocumented Migrants
Bishkek, 12:33, 06 May 2025 – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has initiated a new self-deportation program aimed at encouraging undocumented migrants to voluntarily leave the country. Under this initiative, participants can receive a stipend of $1,000 upon returning to their home country.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem highlighted the program’s benefits, stating, “If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest, and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest. DHS is now offering financial travel assistance through the CBP Home App.” Noem underscores that this option not only protects migrants but also conserves taxpayer resources, estimating a savings of 70 percent compared to traditional deportation methods.
Migrants opting for this route will utilize the CBP Home mobile app to facilitate their departure. To qualify for the $1,000 stipend, they must be back in their home country. Additionally, those who participate in this program may retain the possibility of legal re-entry into the U.S. in the future.
The department further noted that adopting the CBP Home program could significantly reduce taxpayer expenses associated with deportations. Currently, the estimated average cost of arresting, detaining, and deporting an undocumented individual stands at a hefty $17,121.
As this initiative unfolds, it reflects a new approach to managing undocumented migration while aiming to balance law enforcement priorities and humanitarian considerations.
