UNHCR: Needs Rise as 400 Thousand Syrians Return Home
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has reported that approximately 400,000 Syrian refugees have returned from neighboring countries following the overthrow of the Assad regime. Additionally, more than 1 million displaced individuals have returned within Syria, totaling 1.4 million Syrians returning to their homes.
UNHCR has emphasized the need to increase support in areas such as housing, livelihood, protection, and legal aid to ensure successful and sustainable returns. However, UNHCR has only received commitments totaling $71 million out of the $575 million budget requested for operations in Syria as of 2025. The lack of funds may hinder the planned feedback and provision of basic services.
In response to the challenges faced by returning refugees, UNHCR has launched a digital information platform called ‘Syria is Home’. This platform aims to provide up-to-date and reliable information on legal documents, housing, health services, and training needed by refugees during the return process. International aid is also deemed crucial in facilitating the effective return of Syrians to their homes.
