Upcoming Traffic Changes in Downtown Budapest: What to Watch For

Improvements to Trolleybus Circulation in Budapest’s Erzsébetváros District
Efforts to enhance trolleybus operations in Budapest’s Erzsébetváros (District VII) are advancing as the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) announces significant changes to parking systems along Wesselényi and Nefelejcs Streets. This initiative follows nearly completed work on Dohány Street, marking a new phase in the enhancement of public transport in the area.
Objectives of the Initiative
The ongoing investment is a collaborative effort involving BKK, the local government of District VII, Budapest’s Climate and Transport Committee, and Budapest Közút. The primary aim is to eliminate obstacles along vital trolleybus routes that have historically caused delays.
Introduction of New Parking Regulations
Construction kicked off on May 5, signaling the start of the second phase of this transformative project. The affected sections include Wesselényi Street (between numbers 22 and Akácfa Street) and Nefelejcs Street. As part of the new regulations, diagonal parking will be replaced by parallel parking. This change is intended to prevent improperly parked vehicles from obstructing trolleybus routes and to enhance sidewalk accessibility for individuals using strollers or wheelchairs.

Tackling Service Disruptions
The narrow stretches of Dohány, Wesselényi, and Nefelejcs Streets have gained notoriety for service disruptions. Even a vehicle that extends just 20 to 30 centimeters into the roadway can result in significant delays for trolleybuses, which transport hundreds of passengers per hour. In 2024 alone, trolleybuses experienced over 700 blockages in these areas.
Progress on Dohány Street
Improvements on Dohány Street are nearing completion, with the trolley route cleared by eliminating parking on one side of the road. Additionally, a new bike lane has been established, and a turning lane was created at the Síp Street intersection to enhance vehicular traffic flow. Although left-side parking continues to exist, these changes are structured to facilitate faster and more reliable service for nearly 20,000 daily trolleybus users.

A More Accessible Urban Environment
According to BKK, these enhancements are not merely about improving public transport; they’re also geared towards fostering a more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly atmosphere in the urban landscape.
