USAID Helps Improve Safe Drinking Water in Tajikistan Through Private Investments
The United States Government has successfully launched a reconstructed water supply system in Palos Municipality, Buston City, as part of the USAID Rural Water Supply (RWS) Activity. This initiative aims to provide safe drinking water to underserved communities in Tajikistan.
Previously, only half of Palos Municipality’s 4,500 residents had access to safe drinking water due to system breakdowns and lack of maintenance funds. Through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the local government and private operator LLC “Makoni Ozod,” supported by USAID, the water supply system has been fully restored, now serving the entire population.
During the launch, USAID Tajikistan Mission Director, John Riordan, emphasized the successful collaboration between the public and private sectors in achieving a common goal. Furthermore, USAID is working with the Tajikistan government to establish a new PPP law, facilitating the implementation of small-scale projects focused on water services.
Over the past five years, USAID has rehabilitated and constructed 30 water systems across Tajikistan, benefiting over 100,000 people. This project demonstrates the ongoing commitment of USAID to drive development results and improve access to safe drinking water in Tajikistan.
