Uzbekistan and Iran Waive Entry and Transit Fees for Freight Trucks
In a move aimed at promoting bilateral and transit trade, the governments of Uzbekistan and Iran have agreed to waive entry and transit fees for freight trucks. This decision, effective as of January 10, 2025, is expected to significantly reduce costs for transportation of goods between the two countries.
Previously, Iranian authorities charged $400 for the entry of Uzbek freight trucks, but this fee has now been eliminated. The waiver applies to cargo being transported to and from Iran, as well as for trucks in transit through Iranian territory. This move is seen as a positive step towards enhancing trade and improving logistics efficiency for Uzbek carriers operating in the region.
In response, Uzbekistan has reciprocated by waiving entry and transit fees for Iranian freight vehicles, as outlined in the 2025 State Budget Law. The Ministry of Transport in Uzbekistan has stated that this decision was made on a parity basis to ensure that both countries benefit equally from the fee waiver.
However, while Uzbekistan has reduced costs for trucks coming from Iran, it has simultaneously increased tariffs for freight vehicles from Turkmenistan. Trucks weighing up to 20 tons will now face an $80 increase in fees, while those exceeding 20 tons will see a $100 hike. Furthermore, the surcharge for goods transported from third countries has more than doubled, now standing at $375.
Differentiated tariffs have also been introduced for trucks coming from Azerbaijan and European Union countries. Trucks staying in Uzbekistan for less than two weeks will pay $80, while those exceeding this period will be charged $280.
The Ministry of Transport has emphasized that negotiations with other countries, including Turkmenistan, will continue in order to further optimize costs for Uzbek carriers and facilitate trade in the region. This move is expected to promote economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and its neighbors, while also streamlining transportation processes for businesses operating in the region.
