Uzbekistan and Malaysia Enhance Relations through Parliamentary and Diplomatic Talks

A delegation from the Institute for Strategic and Regional Studies under the President of Uzbekistan (ISRS) recently held a series of meetings in Kuala Lumpur as part of their participation in a roundtable discussion on “From Dialogue to Action: Uzbekistan and Malaysia on the Path to Strategic Cooperation.”

During the visit, ISRS Director Eldor Aripov met with Tuan Wong Chen, Chairman of the Committee on International Relations and International Trade of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Malaysia, to discuss the ongoing development of Uzbek-Malaysian relations, specifically focusing on interparliamentary cooperation. Both parties acknowledged the increasing frequency of interactions between the legislative bodies of the two countries, including the establishment of a “Friendship Group” and reciprocal high-level visits.

In the midst of these discussions, Aripov also met with Dato Ahmad Azam, the Special Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia to Afghanistan, to address the current situation in Afghanistan and regional security concerns. They underscored the importance of socio-economic recovery and regional integration to maintain stability in Central and South Asia, and expressed mutual interest in collaborating on educational programs for Afghan nationals.

Additionally, a meeting took place between Aripov and Dato Ganeson Sivagurunathan, Director-General of the Southeast Asia Regional Center for Counter-Terrorism, where they explored opportunities to enhance efforts in combating international terrorism. The discussions primarily focused on strategies to combat violent extremism online and promote reintegration and rehabilitation programs.

Throughout these meetings, all parties emphasized the significance of consolidating efforts to effectively address contemporary threats and challenges. The shared commitment to collaboration and cooperation reflects a promising outlook for the future of Uzbek-Malaysian relations in various areas of mutual interest.
