Uzbekistan implements new regulations for importing electric vehicles

The Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan has recently announced a new resolution that will introduce a recycling fee for electric vehicles (EVs) starting from May 1. The fee will range from 45 million to 78.7 million UZS, depending on the age of the vehicle.
However, there have been misleading reports circulating on social media, causing confusion and debate among the public. These reports claim that the fee will apply to all types of vehicles, which is not true. The recycling fee only applies to electric vehicles, not hybrid or other types of vehicles.
The resolution, titled “On additional measures to finance the establishment of infrastructure for the disposal of battery packs of electric vehicles,” aims to promote the use of “green” technologies, ensure the safe disposal of EV batteries, and support the localization of production in the EV sector.
In addition to the recycling fee, there have been other developments in the electric vehicle industry in Uzbekistan. Imports of electric vehicles have decreased significantly, with fewer vehicles being brought into the country compared to previous years. This decline in imports may be due to new regulations requiring imported vehicles to undergo testing at a designated facility in the Piskent district of Tashkent region.
Recently, a defect was identified in a Chinese-made electric vehicle, leading to a ban on the import of all vehicles from that manufacturer. There have also been calls from entrepreneurs to remove informal restrictions on EV imports in order to support a free market and promote competition.
Despite concerns about the impact of new car manufacturing plants on vehicle prices, the government continues to implement measures to enhance road safety, improve vehicle quality, and support the growth of the electric vehicle industry in Uzbekistan.
