Uzbekistan to Phase Out Plastic Bags by 2027
Uzbekistan Plans to Ban Plastic Bags by 2027 to Reduce Environmental Impact
In an effort to promote environmentally friendly practices and reduce plastic pollution, Uzbekistan is planning to ban the production, import, and use of plastic bags by 2027. This move is part of a national program aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting the use of biodegradable alternatives.
The initiative is outlined in the draft “State Program for the Implementation of the Uzbekistan-2030 Strategy in the Year of Environmental Protection and the Green Economy,” which is currently open for public discussion. The program also includes plans to restrict the use of harmful substances in plastic products and encourage the use of recycled plastics in packaging.
According to the draft presidential resolution, manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging will be required to take on extended responsibilities, such as collecting and recycling waste through systems like “returnable packaging” and setting up special collection points and equipment. They will also be obligated to pay a recycling fee.
Currently, several countries have already implemented full or partial bans on plastic bags, including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, and many others. Countries like France, Italy, and the United Kingdom have imposed high taxes on plastic bags to discourage their use.
With the proposed ban on plastic bags in Uzbekistan, the country aims to make significant strides towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment. The draft program is set to be finalized by November 2025, with implementation expected to begin in 2027.
