White House calls for accountability in Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi case
White House Condemns Killing of Activist Eygi by Israeli Soldiers
At a recent daily press briefing, White House Spokesperson Jean-Pierre addressed the tragic death of Eygi, a US citizen who was killed by Israeli soldiers during a peaceful demonstration in the occupied West Bank.
Expressing condolences to Eygi’s family and stating that the US administration is in contact with them, Jean-Pierre emphasized that the incident should never have happened. President Joe Biden has called for those responsible to be held fully accountable, and for Israel to take measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
When questioned about Biden’s initial description of the incident as an accident, Jean-Pierre referenced a Washington Post investigative report that revealed Eygi was deliberately shot by an Israeli sniper. She explained that the President’s assessment was based on preliminary information and that they are closely monitoring the ongoing investigation.
Despite criticism for not meeting with Eygi’s family members, Jean-Pierre assured that US officials are in contact with them and are working on additional measures. The killing of Eygi has sparked outrage internationally, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemning Israel’s actions and vowing to seek accountability for human rights violations.
Eygi, a human rights activist and member of the International Solidarity Movement, tragically lost his life while advocating for Palestinian rights. His death follows in the footsteps of fellow activist Rachel Corrie, who was killed by an Israeli bulldozer in 2003. The international community continues to call for justice and an end to violence in the region.
