
World Bank VP Holds Talks with Turkmenistan’s Key Officials

World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, Antonella Bassani, recently visited Turkmenistan to discuss the country’s partnership with the international financial institution. The meetings held during the visit highlighted the importance of this collaboration in Turkmenistan’s economic development and regional cooperation.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov hosted Antonella Bassani on February 28. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov acknowledged the long-term cooperation between Turkmenistan and the World Bank, focusing on promoting economic development and implementing reforms in the country. He emphasized the impact of Turkmenistan’s measures on financial and banking system improvements, economic stability, and high growth rates.
Key areas of partnership discussed included the digital economy, financial system modernization, private sector development, environmental sustainability, macroeconomic policy, financial market improvement, and investment expansion. Transport and logistics sector development, particularly in forming international transport corridors like North-South and East-West, were also highlighted.
National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov underscored the World Bank’s significant role in financing key projects in Turkmenistan, especially in sectors like healthcare, education, transport, communications, and energy. The focus of the discussions included the strategic importance of Turkmenistan’s transport sector and the potential of international transport corridors, such as trans-Caspian transportation and the International Sea Port of Turkmenbashi.
Both meetings reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to enhancing its partnership with the World Bank and considering proposals for participating in projects that benefit both parties. The World Bank representatives recognized Turkmenistan’s neutrality status and international initiatives for promoting regional peace.
