Minister Yumaklı Addresses Agricultural Challenges at Ulucanlar Cultural Center
During a recent event at the Ulucanlar Cultural Center titled "City and Agricultural Panel in the Century of Türkiye," Minister Yumaklı underscored the vital role of the agricultural sector in national defense and overall sustainability. In his compelling address, he encouraged new graduates in veterinary science to venture into entrepreneurship rather than seeking traditional public sector jobs.
Yumaklı emphasized the importance of preparing for various challenges that could impact agricultural production, including declining agricultural output, rising production costs, and the availability of raw materials. He cited alarming projections from the United Nations, noting that urbanization is set to rise to 68 percent by 2050, leading to a food demand increase of 60-70 percent. Addressing these challenges, Yumaklı stated, is crucial for ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.
Support for Rural Development
Highlighting the rapid aging of the rural population, Yumaklı referenced discussions from last year’s G20 Summit, noting that rural development must be prioritized. He shared impressive statistics from the Ministry regarding incentives and support, revealing that over the past 23 years, 96,000 projects have received a staggering 126 billion Turkish Lira in grants. He urged ongoing support for youth and women in agriculture to bolster production capabilities.
Enhancing Access to Food
Yumaklı also discussed the benefits of water management initiatives, like the Silvan Project, and emphasized the importance of collaborative dialogue with stakeholders to drive future investments. With plans to establish a framework focused on the next 25-50 years, he highlighted the necessity of implementing actionable outcomes from discussions held in these forums.
"Our goal is to increase the income of consumers, positioning Türkiye as a major player in the global food sector," he asserted, aligning with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s vision of enhancing the nation’s agricultural framework.
The Urbanization Challenge
Mehmet Mehdi Eker, Chairman of the Board of the Agricultural Strategy and Politics Development Center (TARPOL), echoed Yumaklı’s concerns. He raised alarms about the food security implications of growing urban populations, stressing the need for strategic efforts to stabilize food supplies for urban living. Eker’s remarks highlighted the urgent need to cultivate a sustainable relationship between humanity and nature in constructing livable cities.
As Türkiye navigates these agricultural challenges, the focus on sustainable practices, financial support, and urban planning will be key to ensuring the nation’s food security for generations to come.
