150 Teams Face Off in World’s Longest Carp Fishing Tournament at Lake Balaton

The National Boilie Fishing Competition, known as the longest carp fishing tournament in the world, is set to begin this week with 150 teams participating. Taking place at various locations on Lake Balaton, 750 anglers will join in the competition, ensuring a manageable and exciting event, as stated by the tournament director, Zoltán Fülöp.
Lake Balaton is renowned as one of the best carp waters globally, with impressive catches such as two carp over 30 kilograms recorded in last year’s tournament. Emphasizing the priority of fish conservation, Fülöp highlighted that all carp caught, regardless of their size, will be released back into the water alive.
The Managing Director of Balaton Fish Management Non-Profit, Zsolt Szári, emphasized the tournament’s significant role in providing feedback on the development of fish stocks in Lake Balaton over the past decade. From an initial catch of a 17-kilogram carp during the first competition, participants now regularly reel in fish weighing 20-30 kilograms.
Despite experiencing a heatwave this summer, Lake Balaton has maintained stable water levels, with fish stocks unaffected by the rising temperatures. Szári explained that the lake’s consistent oxygen balance has allowed fish to migrate from warmer, shallower waters to deeper sections.
The official start of the tournament is scheduled for September 27, following the opening ceremony on September 26 at Révfülöp (northern shore). Teams can reserve their spots from 8 a.m., with the competition commencing at 2 p.m. The total competition time will span 186 hours, delivering a thrilling experience for Hungarian teams and anglers.
This prestigious event, unique to Hungarian waters, promises an exciting display of skill and sportsmanship among participants. Stay tuned for updates on the National Balaton Boilie Fishing Competition as anglers test their talent on the captivating waters of Lake Balaton.
