16th Human Rights Dialogue Meeting between Turkmenistan and the European Union
The 16th meeting of the Human Rights Dialogue “Turkmenistan – European Union” took place on June 25, 2024, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The event was opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, and the Special Representative of the European Union for Human Rights, Olof Skoog.
During the meeting, discussions focused on enhancing collaboration between Turkmenistan and the European Union in the areas of humanitarian law and human rights. Topics included strengthening civil society, the rule of law, judicial reform, as well as cooperation in education, health, gender equality, and protecting the rights of vulnerable groups such as children and people with disabilities.
Particular attention was given to the implementation of the National Action Plan for Human Rights in Turkmenistan for the period 2021-2025. Emphasis was placed on continuously improving the law enforcement system, increasing accountability in human rights matters, and the role of the Ombudsman institution.
Furthermore, both parties explored the potential for joint projects between Turkmenistan and the EU in the near future. The Dialogue served as a platform for constructive exchanges and the ongoing promotion of human rights and cooperation between Turkmenistan and the European Union.
