18 States Sue Trump Over Birthright Citizenship Abolishment

Prosecutors from 18 states, including California, New York, and New Jersey, have taken action against President Trump’s recent executive order on birthright citizenship. The prosecutors have filed appeals in San Francisco and Washington DC Federal courts, arguing that Trump’s decree is unconstitutional.

In the court petition, Trump is accused of attempting to eliminate an established constitutional principle. The prosecutors stated, “The President does not have the authority to rewrite or invalidate a constitutional amendment or a law that has been duly enacted.”

The petition highlights that around 150 thousand children are born to non-citizen parents in the USA every year. The prosecutors argue that this executive order would deprive these children of basic services and federal funds provided by citizenship.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin expressed his concerns at a press conference, stating that Trump’s move to end birthright citizenship goes against the Constitution. Platkin emphasized, “Presidents in this country have broad powers, but they are not kings.”

Platkin further mentioned, “Our country has followed the same basic rule for over 150 years, that babies born in this country are American citizens. This executive order is not only an attack on the law, it is an attack on the very essence of this nation.”

President Trump signed the executive order abolishing the regulation allowing automatic citizenship for children born in the USA in the Oval Office. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has already taken the matter to court, contesting the constitutionality of the decree.
