2.1 Billion Vehicles Crossed the Bosphorus Second Bridge in 36 Years
Named after the Ottoman Sultan Fatih Sultan Mehmet who conquered Istanbul, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge has been an important connection between the Asian and European continents for 36 years. The bridge, opened on July 3, 1988, has played a significant role in improving transportation in Istanbul.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu highlighted the contributions of the bridge in a statement on its anniversary. He mentioned that the FSM Bridge not only eases traffic congestion but also benefits the city’s economy and helps prevent environmental pollution.
With an average of 230 thousand vehicles passing daily, over 2.1 billion vehicles have crossed the bridge since its opening. Uraloğlu emphasized the importance of mega projects like the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the July 15 Martyrs Bridge, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, and the Eurasia Tunnel in providing efficient transportation options and reducing carbon emissions.
Istanbul, a city known for its historical, commercial, and cultural significance, has always prioritized transportation due to its large population and economic importance. The construction of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge began in 1985, and it was completed ahead of schedule on May 29, 1988, before opening for service on July 3, 1988.
