2023 Sees Astana International Exchange Achieve Significant Results
The Astana International Exchange (AIX) has reported positive results in listings, trading volume, and capital raised for the year 2023, despite facing challenges such as high market interest rates and geopolitical uncertainties. According to the AIX’s press service, the exchange saw significant growth in various key areas.
As of December 31, the AIX had 94 different issuers listed, with a total of 150 securities on the exchange. The debt capital raised since its inception reached $4.2 billion, while equity capital stood at $365 million.
AIX CEO Assel Mukazhanova praised the results and emphasized the listing of a substantial array of debt instruments, attracting over $2 billion. She also reaffirmed the AIX’s objective to facilitate sustainable, long-term growth in the capital market, providing support during challenging times for both local and foreign companies.
The total trading turnover more than tripled from $173 million in 2022 to $582 million in 2023, with equity trading nearly doubling to $130 million. The AIX also boasts 37 trading members, including brokers from Kazakhstan, China, and European countries, and the AIX Central Securities Depository hosts over 1.5 million investor accounts.
In terms of equity trading, Polymetal International emerged as the most traded equity, capturing 31.1% of the trading share, followed closely by KazMunayGas national oil and gas company’s common shares at 30.7%. Additionally, Kazatomprom national atomic company’s common shares and global depository receipts accounted for 18.2% of total trading for the year.
Non-residents contributed 31% to equity trading in 2023, showcasing the AIX’s international status. The AIX Qazaq Index, representing securities of ten companies in Kazakhstan, also saw a significant increase, surging by 28.37%, from 948.36 to 1,217.38 points.
These positive results indicate the AIX’s resilience and growth potential in the face of challenges, positioning the exchange as a key player in the regional and international capital markets.
