The county vignette covers specific regions, while the e-vignette is valid from the purchase date (except for bank transfer payments, where it starts on the payment receipt date).
To avoid surcharges when using the Hungarian motorway network, drivers must purchase toll vignettes before entering a toll section. Failure to do so will result in a surcharge, but there is a 60-minute grace period allowing drivers to buy a vignette within one hour of entering the toll road without penalty. Surcharge amounts vary depending on whether they are paid within 60 days or after. Within 60 days, the surcharge is HUF 26,640 (EUR 64.42), and after 60 days, it’s HUF 91,780 (EUR 221.93). Drivers can reduce fines by opting for a lower category of vignettes and can avoid surcharges by purchasing an annual national vignette within 75 days of the notice and requesting in writing or in person at the National Toll Payment Service Ltd.
