23 Million Sudanese Facing Food Insecurity: UN Report
Sudan is currently facing the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis, according to the United Nations. The conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has resulted in 15 months of fighting, leading to devastating consequences for the Sudanese people.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric highlighted the severity of the situation, stating that only 30 percent of the $2.7 billion required for the Sudan humanitarian response plan has been funded. With 23 million people in Sudan lacking access to sufficient food, the situation is dire. Dujarric compared the number of people affected to the entire population of Australia, emphasizing that 750 thousand individuals are on the brink of famine, a number that is expected to increase during the rainy season.
The conflict in Sudan has resulted in 16 thousand direct casualties, with the actual death toll believed to be much higher due to the collapse of the health system. The UN’s International Organization for Migration reported that 7.7 million people have been internally displaced in Sudan since the war began in April 2023. Additionally, UNICEF noted that Sudan has the highest number of displaced children in the world, with 5 million affected.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that 1 in 5 people in Sudan are currently experiencing emergency level food insecurity. As the crisis in Sudan continues to worsen, it is crucial for the international community to come together and provide support to the Sudanese people in their time of need.
