“2nd Round Selection Process Explained: Last Minute Overview”

The first round of the Turkish presidential elections held on April 24 ended without any candidate securing the required 50 percent plus 1 vote to be elected as the 13th President of the republic. According to the Supreme Election Board (YSK), President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the candidate of the People’s Alliance, received 49.49 percent of the vote, while the candidate of the Nation Alliance, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, received 44.79 percent of the vote. As a result, a second round of voting will take place on May 28 between Erdoğan and Kılıçdaroğlu.

The deadline for candidate replacement ended at 17:00 on April 25, and if one of the candidates entitled to participate in the second round does not participate in the election for any reason, the period determined for candidate replacement will end at the same time on April 26. The propaganda period for the candidates who qualify for the second round will begin on May 15, and the period of objection to the district election boards against the decisions and minutes of the ballot box committees will expire at 17:00 on the same day.

The overseas district election board will change the storage and transportation board, ballot box committee, and other officials, if any. Voting will begin at customs gates and abroad on May 20, and voting abroad will end on May 24. The voting day in the second round will be May 28, and provisional results of the presidential election will be announced on May 29. However, objections to the district election boards against the decisions and minutes of the ballot box committees will expire at the same time on May 29.

The final results of the presidential election will be announced on June 1, and objections against the provincial election board’s decisions and the provincial merger minutes will be decided by the YSK. The YSK will send the final election results to the relevant authorities to be announced in the Official Gazette, radio, and television.

Meanwhile, 16 members of the Cabinet were elected MPs from the AK Party, and the MHP also turned the corner to the polls. With the second round of the Turkish presidential election just around the corner, many are wondering how the 14-day process will work.
