37 people sentenced to death for attempted coup in Democratic Republic of Congo

The trial of 51 individuals involved in an attempted coup against Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has been concluded by the court, according to BBC reports. Thirty-seven individuals, including citizens from the United States, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Canada, have been sentenced to death, while 14 others have been acquitted and released.
The coup attempt, which took place on May 19 in the DRC, was successfully thwarted by security forces. Some of the coup plotters lost their lives in clashes between security forces and armed gunmen in the Goma district of the capital Kinshasa. Following these events, a total of 51 individuals were brought to trial in a military court.
The outcome of the trial highlights the severity with which the DRC is dealing with threats to its government and democracy. The swift action taken by security forces to prevent the coup demonstrates the commitment of the country to uphold its legal and political institutions. The verdict serves as a warning to those who seek to destabilize the peace and stability of the nation.
