4.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Hatay
A 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Kırıkhan district of Hatay, Turkey, with the epicenter hitting at 05:32. The earthquake was reported to have struck at a depth of 8.28 kilometers underground and was felt in the city center as well. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of any negative effects caused by the earthquake.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Ali Yerlikaya, gave a statement regarding the earthquake emphasizing that all relevant institutions, especially the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), are actively conducting field scanning work in the affected areas. He also extended his well-wishes to those impacted by the earthquake.
AFAD also confirmed that there were no negative situations reported following the earthquake. The agency stated that field scanning efforts were ongoing and wished for the swift recovery of the affected citizens.
Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy expressed his thoughts on the earthquake, indicating that it was likely an aftershock. He highlighted that Kırıkhan, where the earthquake occurred, is known to have faults, and this aftershock may have caused further damage to already vulnerable structures.
Considering Turkey’s status as an earthquake-prone region, experts noted that aftershocks were anticipated following a larger earthquake. They explained that smaller earthquakes, with magnitudes of up to 4, could continue to occur in the aftermath of the 4.8 magnitude earthquake.
With the recent increase in seismic activity in Turkey, experts cautioned the public to remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks.
