418 Detained in Unauthorized May Day Protests

May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day Celebrations: A Day of Peace Amidst Restrictions
On May 1, celebrations across the country in recognition of Labor and Solidarity Day proceeded without incident, according to a statement from the General Directorate of Security (EGM). While officially sanctioned festivities went smoothly, security forces closely monitored and prevented any unauthorized demonstrations outside the designated celebration areas.
Unpermitted Demonstrations and Arrests
Despite the peaceful atmosphere, a total of 418 individuals were detained for attempting to participate in these unauthorized actions. After an investigation, 374 of these detainees were released following their statements. Meanwhile, 36 individuals were referred to the court by the prosecutor’s office but were also released under judicial control.
In addition to these events, there were notable allegations regarding an attack on a vehicle belonging to the Republican People’s Party (CHP). Authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with this incident.
Ongoing Judicial Proceedings
Among those apprehended, eight individuals are currently facing judicial proceedings related to terrorism offenses, highlighting concerns over security and public safety during national celebrations.
As the nation reflects on the day’s events, the focus remains on maintaining peace while upholding the right to assemble and express solidarity among workers.
