52-Year Project: Sándor Petőfi’s Complete Poems Released in Critical Edition

The sixth and final volume of the critical editions of all the poems of Sándor Petőfi, covering the period from 1848-1849, has recently been published. Co-published by the MNMKK National Széchényi Library and Universitas Publishing House, with the support of the Petőfi Cultural Agency, this volume marks a significant milestone in Hungarian literary studies. The release of this volume has not only filled a gap in Petőfi’s philology but has also increased the number of reference books that provide a clear understanding of Petőfi’s figure and the nature of his language.

The completion of the full series of critical editions of all of Sándor Petőfi’s poems took 52 years, twice the length of the poet’s lifetime. The sixth volume, which contains poems written in 1848 and 1849, includes well-known works reflecting on the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence, as well as Petőfi’s final major epic work, the poetic narrative “The Apostle” (“Az apostol”).

Sándor Petőfi, a Hungarian poet and liberal revolutionary, is considered Hungary’s national poet and was a key figure in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Although he is believed to have died in the Battle of Segesvár (SIGHIŞOARA, now in Romania), his legacy lives on through his timeless poetry.

The release of the last volume of the critical edition of Sándor Petőfi’s poems was celebrated at the National Library of Foreign Literature maintained by the MNMKK National Széchenyi Library. The volume is now available for purchase at the library’s bookstore.

This publication also provided an opportunity to incorporate new research findings for the 200th anniversary of Petőfi’s birth, paying tribute to both the poet and the dedicated philologists who have worked on the series over the past five decades. The completion of this monumental project was made possible by the contributions of scholars like Ferenc Kerényi and Márton Szilágyi, who meticulously worked to ensure the authenticity and scholarly excellence of the texts.

The critical edition of Sándor Petőfi’s poems not only preserves the full and authentic form of the text but also sheds light on its historical context and cultural significance. It enriches the reading experience by providing detailed information on the reception of the poems during Petőfi’s time.

Overall, the publication of the final volume of the critical editions of Sándor Petőfi’s poems is a testament to the enduring legacy of one of Hungary’s most beloved poets and revolutionaries. The meticulous research and dedication of the scholars involved have brought new depth and understanding to Petőfi’s literary contributions, ensuring that his work continues to be cherished and studied for generations to come.
