The 663rd edition of the historic Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling tournament is set to take place from July 4th to July 7th at Sarayiçi Er Square. This year, there will be a significant change in the format of the competition as it transitions to a league method.
With the league method, the number of wrestlers participating in the tournament will be one third less than in previous years. A total of 852 wrestlers of 14 different sizes will compete in the new style, which is expected to enhance the viewing experience for spectators.
In the past, the number of wrestlers participating in Kırkpınar has been as high as 2,475, but this year’s reduced number aims to make the competition more competitive and exciting. The process of qualifying for Kırkpınar has also changed, with 28 wrestlers set to compete in a preliminary round on July 4th to secure a spot in the main tournament.
The Turkish Traditional Wrestling Federation introduced the league system for Kırkpınar last year, consisting of 7 stages. Wrestlers who finish in the top 32 in the league points table will directly qualify for Kırkpınar, while the remaining spots will be determined through the preliminary elimination method.
The draw and matches for the tournament will follow a specific procedure outlined by the Federation, ensuring fairness and competitiveness throughout the competition.
