99 Defendants on Trial for Participating in Istanbul Demonstrations

The case of 99 defendants who participated in demonstrations in Istanbul was recently seen in court. The Istanbul 62nd Criminal Court of First Instance presided over the proceedings, with some defendants, lawyers, and prominent politicians in attendance.
Among those present were CHP Diyarbakir Deputy Sezgin Tanrikulu and CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Ozgur Celik. The defendants who refused to accept the charges presented their defenses during the hearing.
The court announced its decision, stating that the files of journalist defendants Ali Onur Tosun, Gökhan Kam, Bülent Kılıç, Zeyneb Ceren Kuray, Emre Orman, Yasin Akgül, Hayri Tunç, Kurtuluş Arı, and lawyer defendants Baran Nevzacanoğlu, Aziz Can Cengiz, Deniz Demirdöğen, and Mine Erdost would be reexamined.
Furthermore, the court decided to collect all camera footage related to the alleged actions and send them to relevant authorities for expert evaluation. This footage includes images of the defendants at the moment of the incident, as well as any warnings issued regarding the unauthorized demonstration.
The hearing was adjourned until October 3rd, allowing for further investigation and analysis of the evidence presented.
In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, it was stated that the defendants had violated the prohibition on gatherings, marches, and protests issued by the Istanbul Governor. Despite warnings to disperse, the defendants continued to engage in the prohibited activities.
The indictment outlines possible sentences of up to three years in prison for those found guilty of defying the prohibition and resisting law enforcement efforts. The case is ongoing, with significant implications for the defendants involved.
