Abuse and Torture of Prisoners Uncovered in Gaza’s Secret Prisons

Israel’s treatment of Gaza prisoners condemned

The Ministry of Prisoners and Released Persons in Gaza has released a statement condemning the unprecedented blackout imposed on the situation of Gaza prisoners in Israeli prisons and camps since October 7. The statement highlights the alarming treatment of captives in secret camps, such as “Sede Teman” in the Negev Desert, where they are reportedly subjected to heavy and systematic torture.

It was reported that prisoners have been mistreated, beaten during interrogations, and hung by their hands from high places. Despite interrogation being over for many prisoners, Israeli authorities refuse to release them or allow visits from institutions like the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The statement accuses Israel of engaging in murder, execution, and sadistic behavior against prisoners, calling for an international investigation into these crimes. The international community is urged to pressure Israel to open the doors of its secret prisons and camps to international institutions and lawyers.

Since October 27, 2023, the Israeli army has detained thousands of Palestinians, including women, children, and healthcare workers, in the Gaza Strip. Some detainees have been released, but the fate of many others remains unknown.

The statement also mentions the death of Dr. Adnan al-Bursh, the Orthopedics Department Head at Şifa Hospital, who was detained while on duty in Gaza and died as a result of torture in an Israeli prison on April 19.

Israeli army’s land attack on Rafah

On May 7, the Israeli army launched a land attack on the east of Rafah, taking control of the Palestinian side of Rafah, which includes the border gate to Egypt. The occupied area also includes the Rafah Border Gate, the main crossing point for humanitarian aid and the only exit for Palestinians in Gaza to travel abroad.

Since October 7, Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip have resulted in the deaths of 35,903 Palestinians, including 15,103 children and 9,849 women, with 80,420 people injured. Many are still believed to be trapped under rubble, and civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, has been targeted.

Ashraf al-Qudra, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health in Gaza, reports that over 20,000 cancer, heart patients, and injured individuals are waiting for the border gate to open. Additionally, more than 493 medical personnel have been killed, and over 310 have been detained in Israel’s attacks since October 7.

The situation in Gaza continues to be dire, with calls for international intervention and accountability for the crimes committed against Palestinian prisoners and civilians.
