French Union Calls on Macron to Respect Election Results
The CGT Cheminots Union in France has issued a statement calling on President Emmanuel Macron to respect the results of the recent election. The union has criticized Macron’s social and economic policies as being violent and called for demonstrations to demand a government consisting of a leftist alliance.
The statement, released on the union’s official account, includes demands such as the removal of a controversial reform that increased the retirement age to 64, salary increases, and equality between male and female employees in the professional realm.
Sophie Binet, the Secretary General of the CGT, appeared on LCI TV urging the public to join the demonstrations and pressure Macron to respect the election results. Binet expressed concerns that Macron’s actions could lead the country into chaos if he does not adhere to the will of the voters.
Meanwhile, Sandrine Rousseau, a Green Party member of parliament, voiced frustration on French television over the delays in forming a government within the leftist alliance. She emphasized the need for stability in the country and the importance of being able to govern effectively.
Senate President Gerard Larcher, in a statement to BFMTV, criticized Macron for dissolving the parliament and called on him to save the country from the turmoil. Larcher also stated that a government consisting of the leftist alliance should be formed, even if it means the current government falling.
The French public, according to a recent poll, believes that the country is currently ungovernable. The election results have also been viewed as a failure for Macron and his ruling party, with 75 percent of respondents sharing this sentiment.
