Aegean Fault Lines: Independent Earthquake Threats
A panel organized by Kuşadası Municipality and Chamber of Civil Engineers Aydın Branch shed light on the causes that turn earthquakes into disasters and the seismicity of the Aegean Region, particularly focusing on Kuşadası. The event was attended by various prominent figures, including Deputy Mayor of Kuşadası Salim Tümer Apaydın, Chamber of Civil Engineers Aydın Branch President Ali Atılım Kahraman, and NGO representatives.
During the panel, experts discussed issues related to the safety of existing building stock, necessary reinforcements, and the earthquake map of Kuşadası. Middle East Technical University (METU) Civil Engineering Department Head Prof. Dr. Erdem Canbay and Yıldız Technical University (YTU) Civil Engineering Department Geotechnical Department Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy shared their insights as speakers.
Deputy Mayor Salim Tümer Apaydın highlighted the municipality’s efforts in taking precautions against potential earthquakes in Kuşadası. He mentioned a previous congress on ‘Earthquake and Urban Transformation’ aimed at creating a roadmap based on scientific data to address earthquake risks, criticizing the flawed regulations under the name of Reconstruction Peace.
METU Civil Engineering Department Head Prof. Dr. Erdem Canbay pointed out that there are no issues with the earthquake regulations in Turkey, dating back to 1937. He emphasized the importance of correct construction practices, zoning plans, training of engineers, and effective state control mechanisms to mitigate earthquake risks.
YTU Civil Engineering Department Geotechnical Department faculty member Prof. Dr. Şükrü Ersoy discussed the fault characteristics in Kuşadası Bay and emphasized the need for harmony between the ground and structures in the region. He highlighted the potential earthquake risks posed by fault lines in the area, including the Büyük Menderes fault line.
Overall, the panel provided valuable insights into earthquake preparedness and risk mitigation strategies in Kuşadası and the broader Aegean Region, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts by various stakeholders to ensure the safety of residents.
