The AFAD Science Committee Holds Meeting in Muğla to Discuss Possible Seismic Impact on Turkish Shores
A meeting was recently held in Muğla, outside of Ankara, to discuss the potential impact of seismic activity in the Aegean Sea, particularly in the Santorini Island area, on the shores of Türkiye. The meeting was attended by representatives of scientists and local authorities, who gathered to evaluate and review the provincial and district plans within the Turkish Disaster Intervention Plan.
One of the main topics of discussion was the potential effects of a volcanic explosion or earthquake on the shores of Türkiye. Members of the scientific committee shared their evaluations, stating that in modeling studies, it was projected that any tsunami resulting from such events would reach the shores of Türkiye no earlier than 1 hour after the initial impact, and that no destructive effects were expected.
Following the meeting in Muğla, the AFAD Science Committee members will hold information meetings in Aydın and İzmir. They will also examine the measures taken in coastal districts such as Bodrum and Didim to prepare for any potential seismic events.
