AFAD to Provide Accommodation for Tekirdağ Earthquake Victims
A contract had been signed between Kumbağ Turizm İşletmeleri A.Ş. and Tekirdağ Metropolitan Municipality to provide shelter for 50 victims of the earthquake that occurred in Kahramanmaraş on February 6. The victims were expected to stay at the facility between February 13 and August 13, 2023. However, in a letter dated May 16, 2023, the Metropolitan Municipality Secretary General, Fatih Ünsal, announced that the temporary accommodation service would be terminated on May 21, and AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority) was asked to take the necessary actions.
After this development, AFAD President Yunus Sezer sent a letter to the Tekirdağ Governorship Provincial Directorate of Disaster and Emergency stating that the earthquakes’ victims will be accommodated in AFAD’s facilities. The article emphasized that the earthquake victims were the trust of the nation and the state, and all their needs must be met with sensitivity. Also, the guests would be provided with hotel accommodation whenever they want, provided that the price is paid.
The Tekirdağ Metropolitan Municipality stated that the earthquake victims who came to the city were much higher than expected and that the stipulated period expired early due to the limit of 5 million TL published in the Official Gazette. The Governorship and AFAD will inform the victims and transfer them from the hotels to AFAD’s accommodation facilities in a coordinated manner.
The Tekirdag Governor’s Office emphasized that AFAD and other institutions would continue to support the victims and meet their needs. The earthquake victims would not be left without any help.
