Agricultural Medicines Inspection Board Improves Food Safety Inspections – BRTK

Agricultural Medicines Inspection Board Reports Record Levels of Inspections

The Agricultural Medicines Inspection Board has been conducting fruit and vegetable inspections at “record levels”, with samples being taken from each product at least once before harvest. Additionally, samples are taken from each shipment of imported products to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

In 2024, analysis was conducted on 1,116 samples, with 68 of them (6 percent) testing positive for over-limit or non-recommended plant protection products. This rate is consistent with the previous year, showing the importance of continued monitoring and inspection. Among imported products, apples showed the highest contamination levels, while domestically produced peppers also displayed significant contamination.

Cem Karaca, Chairman of the Agricultural Medicines Inspection Board, emphasized the importance of increasing the number of analyses and improving the quality of analysis to ensure food safety. Currently, the Board can test for 478 active substances, with plans to expand this to over 600. Karaca stated that increasing the capacity for analysis will elevate food safety standards in the country.

The Board, comprised of representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Health, focuses on inspecting plant protection products, residues in imported and local products, and monitoring drug dealers. Karaca highlighted the need for businesses selling plant protection products to have qualified experts to provide recommendations and ensure compliance with regulations.

Farmers are encouraged to participate in training sessions organized by the Department of Agriculture to stay informed about best practices and regulations. Manufacturers found to be using over-limit or non-recommended products face fines under the new law, emphasizing the importance of compliance and responsibility.

The main goal of the Agricultural Medicines Inspection Board is to raise public awareness, update laws, and enhance food safety and environmental protection. By increasing the number of engineers involved in inspections, the Ministry aims to further improve inspection frequency and effectiveness.

Ercan Akerzurumlu, Director of the Department of Agriculture, highlighted the rigorous inspection process conducted by the Board, with every product being checked at least once before harvest. The Board’s focus on ensuring compliance with regulations and preventing the use of harmful substances underscores its commitment to food safety and consumer protection.

Overall, the Agricultural Medicines Inspection Board plays a crucial role in safeguarding the quality of fruits and vegetables in the market and promoting public health and safety. Continued vigilance and collaboration with industry stakeholders are key to maintaining high standards and protecting consumers from harmful substances.
