Ahmet Sami Topcan Remembered on 19th Death Anniversary
On May 4th, Ahmet Sami Topcan, the Founding President of the National Olympic Committee of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, was commemorated on his 19th death anniversary. A memorial ceremony was held at his grave in Nicosia Cemetery, where family, friends, and members of the political and sports community gathered to pay their respects.
Born on May 5, 1921, in Nicosia, Topcan had a notable career in Turkish Cypriot sports. He excelled in various sports including football, hockey, and table tennis between 1936 and 1955. Throughout his life, Topcan held several important positions in the sports community, such as organizing athletics races, coaching football teams, and serving as a football referee.
In addition to his contributions to sports, Topcan also had a successful career in non-sports roles, serving as a Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner in Nicosia and Famagusta, respectively. He also held roles in various government departments before his passing in 2005.
Topcan’s dedication and service to Turkish Cypriot sports were recognized posthumously with awards and honors. His legacy continues to be honored through events and awards named after him, such as the Ahmet Sami Topcan Meeting Hall and the Outstanding Service Award presented by the Turkish Cypriot Sports Writers Association.
The Turkish Cypriot Football Federation also organized a Referee and Observer Seminar in honor of Topcan, further highlighting his lasting impact on the sports community in Northern Cyprus. Ahmet Sami Topcan’s memory lives on through these tributes and the continued celebration of his contributions to Turkish Cypriot sports.
