AI-Related Verb Named Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the Year
The verb “hallucinate” has been named the word of the year by the Cambridge English Dictionary, with a new meaning associated with the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
According to the dictionary, the new meaning of the word “hallucinate” is related to false information produced by AI. It is explained that as AI models become more advanced, they are capable of impressive feats such as passing exams in law and medicine. However, there have been instances where AI models have generated information that does not correspond to reality, which are referred to as hallucinations or confabulations.
The selection of “hallucinate” as the word of the year sheds light on the controversy surrounding artificial intelligence. To celebrate this choice, the dictionary has shared a post dedicated to recent English language terms related to artificial intelligence, such as chatbot and generative AI.
This decision comes after the British English dictionary Collins Dictionary recognized “AI” as the word of the year in a previous announcement.
The new meaning of “hallucinate” highlights the impact of AI on language and the ongoing debate surrounding the technology.
